Abstract

Chronic illness in childhood presents a certain risk for a child´s healthy personal development. Different chronic and prolonged illnesses have a different impact on the child. Every illness has its own characteristics, certain limitations, external signs, therapeutic demands, discomfort and pain, course and consequences. Pain is not always a visible sign. Pain can be difficult for a child to describe or express, but that does not mean that he/she does not feel it. Experts are of the opinion that children rarely pretend to have pain. Pain treatment includes pain assessments, recognition and management (pharmacological and non-pharmacological management).

Key words: chronic pain, pain assessment, pain management.
