Abstract

Lactose intolerance is a condition characterized by a deciency or by a total absence of the enzyme lactase. Lactase, which is normally found in cells of the gastrointestinal tract mucosa, acts by splitting lactose into two monoglycerides – glucose and galactose, since gastrointestinal epithelia is impermeable to undegraded lactose. In the article the frequency and types of lactose intolerance are described, together with diagnostic methods that are used to conrm the condition. Finally, suggestions on how to live an almost normal life despite having lactose intolerance are presented.

Key words: lactose intolerance, child, nursing care, test.
