Abstract

Migraine is the most common cause of acute, episodic headaches in children. The prevalence of migraine is 3% in preschool children and up to 20% in older adolescents. The characteristics of migraine headaches are different in children compared to adults, although the basic pathophysiological mechanisms are similar. The clinical picture of migraine in adolescence resembles that in adults. A comprehensive approach to migraine in childhood and adolescence can decrease its influence on daily and school activities and improve the quality of life of children and adolescents. Above all, effective and early treatment of migraine should decrease the prevalence of complicated migraines in adulthood.
