Abstract

Lymphangiomas are benign malformations of the lymphatic system and one of the most frequent congenital vascular malformations. They represent approximately 6% of all benign tumours in children. In about half of the patients the lymphangiomas are already obvious at birth. During the first 2 years of life lymphangiomas are detected in 80 – 90% of cases. About 60% of all lymphangiomas are found in the head and neck region, primarily affecting the tongue and the floor of the mouth. Patients should be treated by a multidisciplinary team of physicians and health professionals familiar with lymphatic malformations. There are various management options: supportive, surgical, endovascular (sclerotherapy) and medications.

Key words: lymphangioma, lymphatic malformations, lymphangiogenesis, lymphoedema.
