Abstract

Tinea is a fungal infection of the skin caused by dermatophytes. The two most common skin fungal infections in children before puberty are tinea corporis and tinea capitis. An accurate diagnosis is crucial for proper management of the disease. The clinical appearance, history and laboratory studies (potassium hydroxide (KOH) examination of the skin and fungal culture) are used for detection of dermatophyte infection. Clinicians unfamiliar with this condition can misdiagnose tinea corporis, which leads to delays in diagnosis and treatment. We present a case of a 6-year-old, previously healthy girl, with a misdiagnosed tinea infection.
