Abstract

During the last 50 years, we have witnessed the establishment of paediatric gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition as a recognised and successful clinical subspecialty in Europe and Slovenia. The basic three most common clinical problems in childhood in the early 19th century, diarrhoea, jaundice and milk feeding, were the basis for the establishment of the European Society for Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (ESPGHAN). This association had a decisive influence on all areas of clinical and scientific progress, diagnostics and therapy of gastrointestinal diseases in children in Europe and Slovenia. This article describes the development of the field in Europe and Slovenia.
