Abstract
Respiratory distress and respiratory failure are common problems seen in term and preterm neonates admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit. The choice of respiratory and oxygen delivery device depends on the available devices that meet the needs of the individual neonate. There are different modes of respiratory support and oxygen supplementation used in infants with respiratory failure. The best strategy for neonatal respiratory support is to maintain adequate gas exchange while minimising the risk of further lung damage and, if possible, assisting the infant‘s spontaneous respiratory effort.
