Abstract

Suicide is a complex phenomenon. It arises over an extended period of time and cannot be explained in a simplistic manner. Through the period of adolescence, a teenager faces various burdens. The changes they encounter are physical, mental and social. Numerous developmental tasks demand that the adolescent adapts in ways he or she cannot cope with. Adolescent suicidal behaviour demands special attention. It is necessary to focus on the risk factors and know that these factors are intertwined, which adds to their influence on suicidal behaviour. Much attention must be paid to safety factors, which lessen the risk of suicide. The nurse who admits and oversees a suicidal adolescent plays a significant role in their treatment. The nurse must stimulate the feeling of safety in the adolescent, become his or her confidante, and at the same time direct them towards expressing their problems as well as to the therapist.
