Abstract
Type 1 diabetes is considered an important chronic disease in the paediatric population due to its increasing incidence and the development of severe diabetes-related chronic complications associated with suboptimal long-term metabolic control. The use of insulin pumps has significantly improved glycaemic control with a concomitant improvement in quality of life. The recent introduction of continuous glucose monitoring into routine diabetes management has brought an additional clinical benefit and is becoming a standard of care. The successful use of diabetes-related technology is decisively linked to structured education of individuals with diabetes, their families and school personnel, as well as with efficient organization of diabetes-related healthcare and good cooperation with paediatricians at the primary and secondary level.
