Abstract

Hirsutism is the presence of excessive terminal hair in females in an androgen-dependent, male pattern of distribution. While 80–90% of women with hirsutism have measurable hyperandrogenaemia, the severity of hirsutism and the magnitude of androgen excess are not well correlated. Appropriate diagnostic evaluation of even mild cases of hirsutism is usually warranted. Hirsutism is often a manifestation of an underlying endocrine abnormality and rarely of more serious conditions such as a life-threatening tumour, which requires immediate intervention. We present a case report of a 17-year-old girl with hirsutism, caused by a mixed cell tumour of the left ovary (yolk sac tumour and Sertoli–Leydig cell tumour).

Key words: hirsutism, androgens, mixed cell tumour of the ovary.
