Abstract

Haematopoetic stem cell transplantation is a highly specialised procedure, which has been performed by haematologists at the UKC Ljubljana for the past 25 years. Since 1990 there have been 120 transplantations in Slovenian children, 99 of these being performed at the Paediatric clinic in Ljubljana. The list of indications for transplantation is constantly changing; nevertheless, acute leukaemias, aplastic anaemia and neuroblastoma are the most frequent underlying diseases necessitating haematopoetic stem cell transplantation. In the last couple of years, the number of children transplanted for primary immunodeficiencies and inborn errors of metabolism has also been on the increase. Based on current indications, it is estimated that between 10 and 15 haematopoetic stem cell transplantations would be performed in children in Slovenia annually.
