LONG-TERM VIDEO-EEG MONITORING

Abstract

Long-term video-electroencephalographic (EEG) and acoustic recording (long-term monitoring, LTM) is a crucial method for evaluating electroclinical correlations in both epilepsy and other paroxysmal events that can be mistaken for epilepsy. It is most often used in two major groups of patients: those in the primary diagnostic evaluation of paroxysmal events, and those in the presurgical evaluation of drug-resistant epilepsy. The aim of recordings is to document enough of the patient’s typical events to enable a diagnosis to be made from electroclinical correlations. Seizure recording is the gold standard for the presurgical evaluation of patients with drug-resistant epilepsies. The method is relatively expensive and demanding, both for the patient and staff, as continuous 24-hour monitoring and regular data analysis are necessary. This paper presents the general recommendations for carrying out the procedure and the experiences of the Centre for epilepsies in children and adolescents at the University Children's Hospital Ljubljana in long-term video-EEG monitoring.
