Abstract
Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is one of the most common abnormalities of musculoskeletal development. It covers a wide spectrum of irregularities. Known risk factors include a positive family history, breech presentation, female gender and improper and tight swaddling. DDH is the most common cause of hip arthritis in women younger than 40 years and accounts for 9% to 10% of all total hip replacements. As such, emphasis should be placed on early diagnosis and treatment. Therefore, clinical assessment of the newborns and ultrasound based screening at the age of 6 weeks is recommended. when initiated early, treatment using a simple abduction harness has an excellent success rate.
