Abstract

Pyuria or leukocyturia is dened as the presence of more than five leukocytes per high power field using sedimented urine or more than 15 leukocytes/mm3 using non-sedimented urine. Pyuria can be a completely benign sign, representing a false positive urine test for pyuria due to contaminated urine. Most often it is a result of urinary tract infection, but it can also be a sign of a serious renal disorder. In this article the diagnostic work-up of pyuria is presented, in which the authors describe the methods used to establish or confirm pyuria and to determine its aetiology. The clinical signs of the most frequent differential diagnostic possibilities in a child with pyuria, and finally, the treatment of pyuria, are presented.

Key words: pyuria, leukocyturia, children, urinary tract infection, sterile pyuria.
